Free As In Lunch? Perth CBD WIFI Review

A few months ago the City of Perth announced free blanket wifi coverage of the Perth CBD.

Back then I gave it a shot, I got limited connectivity, taking several attempts to connect while standing in the Hay Street Mall, and then the link was very slow when I did connect.

I haven’t tried it since, not wanting to waste my time on a slow 50mb allowance when 3G was much quicker and easier.

But today I thought I would give it another try. Sitting in the Central Park outdoor grass area, I went to my wifi connections list and found … No Perth WIFI.

Tried again a few minutes later and PERTH WIFI showed up in the list but it failed to connect when I selected it.

Time to move to the mall and try again. More success this time. After connecting I get the usual T & C web page and Agree button.

Connected and good speeds. Full signal.

Next step try Forrest Chase. Not bad, good strength, probably better than Hay Street.

Then St George’s Tce. Works ok out front of The Tree House cafe.

Train Station Central, nothing. No reception.

So I think the coverage is very much the Central Mall Shopping District. I’ll update this post as I check other parts of the city. Better yet, leave a comment and tell me your experiences. Or even any free city wifi you have found.
