“…In the tech space it does sadden me that our government cannot do any more in that space at the moment because it is the future.

I was fortunate enough, I was just sharing this with Brody (McCulloch) as well, to be at G’day USA,  in January,  in the United States and we had some time in San Francisco, and I was just blown away by the stuff that’s happening there, you guys would know about it a lot more that I do. A lot of you are nodding and its just incredible, and I want more of that for Perth. We need to be so strong in the creative industry sector and obviously the knowledge economy particularly in light of the downturn in manufacturing in our country and obviously the strong labour regime that we do have here.

But I want to say a very special thanks to the organisers of Startup Weekend, for what it does for our city, for what it does for you guys particularly. Its very important that we continue to have a close working relationship with you because we consider you a very strong part of the future Perth brand in terms of what we want our city to be known as and branded as.

So I really urge you to Tweet your hearts out, and to Facebook and do all the stuff this weekend to really get it out there, make it trend that Perth is active in this space and certainly over the last couple of years its been really wonderful to see some evolution in this innovation community and certainly again let me just say I really hope that you network closely tonight and over the weekend and really get the most out of it that you can.

And certainly also I have just hear that Brody (McCulloch) is off on a Churchill Scholarship, I think that’s fantastic, again he’s doing such great work as is Sam (Birmingham), and all the team putting this together. We also have many members of our economic unit here this evening who are also just really proud of what you guys represent for us.

The St Georges Terrace address we know really helps, and certainly having that connectedness to the City is another great thing and I hope that you enjoy that as well because you are the face of Perth for us as much as I like to be occasionally too.

Anyway, thank you for listening to your Mayor, and have a really nice weekend.” Lisa Scaffidi, Mayor Of Perth
