Ignition, one of the oldest-running Perth entrepreneur education programs, opens for applications today. The actual program runs from 23rd to 28th August 2015.

Ignition is run by the Curtin Centre for Entrepreneurship, and every year mixes around 50 entrepreneurs with a selection of the community’s finest mentors, some MBA students to provide the theory, and a range of quality speakers on specialist subjects. The week-long program aims to help entrepreneurs get their business going, culminating in a pitch day where each entrepreneur gets to pitch to an experienced panel that includes potential investors.

The program costs $2,350 for the full week, but there are a range of scholarships available if you fulfil the criteria (each scholarship has its own criteria, go here to find out more). All the scholarships are full (i.e. you pay nothing) except the Curtin IP scholarship where the attendee pays $50 (but you have to be a Curtin student or staff member to qualify). If you don’t qualify for any of the scholarships, you can still attend but you need to pay the fee yourself.Group shot 2014

Past attendees have been very positive about the program, we covered it last year and interviewed a few of the attendees and their experience was genuinely positive. Several have gone on to commercial success, including Lee Batey from the Sealz team who successfully concluded their Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign last week!

Not all applicants get into the program, competition for places is high, and all applicants must meet the selection criteria, which can be found here but boil down to:

  • The novelty of the business/idea Innovation.
  • The likelihood of business sustainability.
  • The size of the potential market.

In addition the candidate must be prepared to discuss their idea with the mentors and other program attendees (always a good thing: No-one is going to steal your idea!) and must commit to attending every day for the entire week.

Ignition this year is definitely focusing on the big ideas with large scale and high growth opportunities, in any industry. Entrepreneurs who are ready to apply the knowledge from Ignition and take their idea to the next level immediately with an eye to eventual huge scale and high growth are ideal applicants.
